The Documentary Filmmakers’ Association (DFA) was established to nurture and develop the interests of documentary filmmakers in South Africa.
It remains the only association in South Africa with the sole purpose of assisting, protecting and promoting documentary filmmakers. The DFA is key member of SASFED (The South African Screen Federation).

Umbilical Cords premieres at Encounters International Documentary Festival, 8 June 2012.
The 16-strong delegation was the biggest at Hot Docs and stood out at the festival.
Most of the projects are in the development phase, but a few are completed and looking for distribution.
Co-production day at Hot Docs 2012 happened on Monday 30 April in The Chapel inside the Rogers Industry Centre.
Perspective is a DFA publication that provides insight into the documentary filmmaking process.
Filmmaking, storytelling is intuitive, but filmmakers are sometimes insecure and not prepared to trust that intuition and may often wonder … am I doing the right thing? Perspective lets us watch documentary films and find out from their filmmakers what their processes were as a way to help us through our processes.
